Handsome  Antique Gilt Wood  Lintel  Valence  Pediment Cornice Eyebrow Federal Style
This decorative cornice was placed over a window or door in  interiors. It is a high quality valence with an gilt frame and beautifully geometric work.
This type of cornice was probably once decked  grand rooms for which it was designed. The ornaments was commonly used to accent windows. Observe the purity of the design.
Incorporating architectural salvage into a home decorating scheme is a wonderful way to preserve history, and add an interesting look to your home. The cornice was once atop windows in a Southern mansion, making it a striking piece with a curtain below  or  just as a  architectural  element..

Approximately 92” Long & 8” high to stand about 4"  from the wall.
Condition: Surface wear and scratches from use. This  is  a  very old piece, and there may be imperfections from age so look closely at photos.

It has a great vintage feel to it  and could look great in some modern Office or home.
GOOD CONDITION , smarts from being outside,  but no holes or cracks.
The Lintel or cornice  has  a
nice ornate detail
to it-a handsome architectural accent.

Many  like these could be  used as   bed head board,planters, tables,
and as art displayed on interior and exterior walls.
As you can see in the photos there is aging  but nothing out of character on such pieces.
An  Architectural like this could be used for various   purposes  other  than what it was intentionally made.  I  am not certain of its  original use  but I think it  originally would
fit  originally across the top of the window . From  research  I  found  that
heavy lintels, like droopy eyebrows,  ostensibly were originally used  to  protect  the building, and to decorate it.
During  the last century , cast iron  was commonly used and even  in the 19th century. Cast  iron was used for exterior window and door surrounds or lintels, copings, parapets and balustrades, cornices and friezes, and sculptural ornament.

would be a nostalgic accent.
This   lintel is one part of this Southern Antique collector's possessions , who as the old homes were destroyed  back in the 1930's- 1950'd, this collector carefully salvaged the old architecturals and stored in for more than half of a century. The Newspaper article said."Maybe the collector didn’t even remember where it was stored or why he had saved it all those years. Maybe just because he liked it , with no use in mind. But the fact remains that, in depths of the Great Depression when the decorative features of razed residences might be had, at least, for carting them away at most, for a song. This collector did a lot of singing! His acquisitions, in any event are incorporated today in some of the old south’s pretentious homes. He owned many old homes here and as they were torn down --he managed to salvage much of the fencing , marble mantles, brass door knobs.
Lintels or  pediments of this type  would look great with a vintage home or as an Art Object.
